Urgency of the hour

Saturday July the 5th 2008. The front page of the Sydney Morning Herald declares “Adapt or Perish” in bold font. The scenario - unless we change our way of life with regard to greenhouse emissions and confront the terror of Global warming we shall soon perish.

As usual the newspapers are half right…the heading should have declared “Repent or perish”. But such is the nature of this world.

The point however is that at this time many are well aware of one significant fact “all is not well in this world, at this time” This “Global warming” is but one issue. Consider Peak oil, consider the threat of a global food shortage, now referred to as peak food, consider the present threat of substantial economic hardship in much of the US and Europe, consider the threat of extremist terrorism and the ongoing war on terrorism. These are the days in which we live.

Though I suspect that throughout history men have often considered their day, to be in a perilous state of worldly affairs, never was it more loudly proclaimed than it is today. Never have the nations of the world been more determined to work together to create an order of peace, of economic sustainability, of prosperity, a harmonious world.

And it’s almost as though the harder they try, the more difficult it becomes and the further the dream slips away.

Today we send satellites to the furthest reaches of space to seek a new world, to understand our beginnings, we tinker with genetics, dream about creating life and of improving life, more perfect, without defect, a world without sickness. This distant dream in which man is able to, according to his knowledge, create a new, better, more perfect world, just like heaven.

Why do men do this? you may ask. Ecclesiastes 3:11 : For God has put eternity into the hearts of men

The natural man, unregenerate, and without the knowledge of His creator, and His purposes, will once more attempt to establish Babel, that worldly, earthly kingdom that does it’s best to imitate heaven.

And in like fashion, it’s my hypothesis that when you see the city of Babel, this new world order, once more reach to the heights of heaven, you will know that the end is near.
